Ventnor Film Society returns for our Spring Season on Monday 3rd February with another programme of recent, award-winning films from around the world.
This season, our films will be shown on alternate Mondays, with screenings at both 2.30pm and 7.30pm. We are also pleased to say that we will again be charging £6 for tickets.
All welcome
Everyone is welcome to come along; there is no need to be a member of the Ventnor Arts Club to come to our films and we always like to see new viewers. The bar will be open for drinks, teas, coffees and ice-creams until five minutes before the film is due to start.
This season, we have picked films set in USA, India, Senegal, France, Japan and Iran, shown in the original languages with subtitles. We hope there will be something for everyone, with romance, comedy, drama and crime.
My Favourite Cake
The season opens with My Favourite Cake, a charming comedy of late in life romance. An Iranian widow has an unexpected encounter with a lonely taxi driver that leads to an unforgettable night of music, dance and wine.
However, this gentle film aroused ire amongst the Iranian authorities for its subversive undertones. Monday 3rd February.
Hundreds of Beavers
Our next film is Hundreds of Beavers, a crazy, silent, black-and-white spoof comedy, set in a snowy North American wilderness of a hundred years ago. Cider worker Jean loses his livelihood when beavers wreck his barrels.
So, he turns trapper, attempting to capture beavers and other creatures, all played by adults in furry costumes. When he falls in love with a trader’s daughter, the price of the bride’s hand is…hundreds of beavers! Monday 17th February.
The Crime Is Mine
From Paris of the Jazz Age comes The Crime Is Mine, a crime and courtroom caper with chic period costumes, lavish set designs and a hilarious, scene-stealing role for Isabelle Huppert.
A young actress is acquitted of killing a famous producer, but is she really innocent or has she got away with murder? Monday 3rd March.
Perfect Days
Our next film is the Japanese Perfect Days, a great success at film festivals, with Kôji Yakusho picking up Best Actor at Cannes for his role as Hirayama, a toilet cleaner in Tokyo who is content with his simple routine and passion for music, trees and books.
Although we learn a little about his past life, this quiet film is a meditation on gratitude and finding beauty in the present every day. Monday 17th March.
Banel e Adama
Next to Africa, and a tale of star-crossed lovers, Banel e Adama. In a remote village in Senegal, a young couple are fiercely in love, but at odds with their families’ traditions.
The lovers build an unconventional life for themselves, but when a disastrous drought strikes the community, the villagers place the blame on the troublesome woman, Benal. Monday 31st March.
All We Imagine As Light
Our last selection, All We Imagine As Light, is the first Indian film in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 30 years. This beautiful, emotional film explores female friendship and captures Mumbai’s vibrant atmosphere.
Nurse Prabha receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband, whilst rebellious Anu carries on a secret romance and widowed Parvaty must deal with eviction from her apartment. When they share a trip to a peaceful coastal village, they find a space to explore their dreams. Monday 14th April.
