Ventnor Golf Club: Wind Turbine Planning Application Lodged

Ventnor Golf Club: Wind Turbine Planning Application LodgedNews reaches us that following the initial proposals presented to the Ventnor Town Council back at the end of March, an official planning application has now been lodged with the Isle of Wight Council.

This is the first stage of the £2.9 million development of Ventnor Golf Club, and we’re informed that the initial application is for three 30 metre WES wind turbines.

The Ventnor Golf Club aims to be carbon free within the next three years and hopes that the installation of the turbines will contribute to reducing its carbon footprint.

They tell us that the turbines will generate enough electricity to provide energy for 600 homes (based on UK average house consumption of 4,000 kW per annum) – equivalent to the size of Upper Ventnor, including the two current schools.

The Ventnor Town Council were in full support of the developments planned for the golf club and it is anticipated that the development will strive to be sympathetic to the surroundings and the Downs landscape.

Golf Club manager Stewart Blackmore told us:

“This is a very exciting time for Ventnor Golf Club and for golf on the Isle of Wight. We aim to be one of the best golf clubs on the south coast. We believe that the project will not only take Ventnor Golf Club into the 21st century, but it will also provide Ventnor and the Isle of Wight with a much needed major attraction.

The golf club is fully committed to the Eco Island vision as outlined by Leader of the Council Councillor David Pugh, and his Deputy George Brown, who are both enthusiastic supporters of our plans.

The whole project has been planned to fully support the Eco Island vision, providing employment, tourism, education and sustainability both environmental and financial. We believe that we can become one of the first truly carbon neutral golf clubs in the UK.”

The plans aren’t available online yet, but should be on the Council Planning Web site by Friday.
