Ventnor Library Reading Group meet regularly to discuss the books they are reading.
This month, Yann Martel’s Life of Pi was discussed by the group members.
Here’s what they thought.
“Intriguing and well worth reading … I wouldn’t have read it if it wasn’t a group book … written in the first instance as a true story in novel form … comes across as perhaps a fable … fascinating, quirky, funny … took me a while to get into it but worth it in the end … I shall read more Martel.”
“Are the animals really representations of humans … was the Hyena actually the crewman … the descriptions of the killings disturbing and horrific … was the island real or a fable describing society … the description of Pi’s training of the Tiger interesting and probably accurate … don’t take it literally! Was the Tiger really Pi himself?
“Pi’s search for God and his take on religion as a young person growing up in multi-faith India was interesting … probably all sorts of half truths in it … I loved the description of the humanity of Father on meeting the three holy men”¦I suddenly saw the point of it.”
