Whyte’s efforts not enough
A fine innings of 64 from 17 year old Ross Whyte failed to prevent Ventnor slipping to another defeat in their British Gas Southern League Premier Division clash against top of the table Havant at Newclose on Saturday.
The promising all rounder and son of former skipper Mark hit his first Southern League half century, made all the more impressive with his side struggling on 76-7 when he came in. Toby Corbin (21), Mark Holmes (16) and David Beven (14) assisted the recovery before George Willis (10 not out) helped Whyte add 61 for the last wicket in an excellent stand and an eventual total of 180.
Alex Glendenning claimed two early Havant wickets but Hopson (94) and Gorvin (54 not out) led their side home by six wickets.
The second team were defeated by 99 runs at Totton & Eling II in Hampshire League Division 1.
Harry Ridley (3-52) and Martin Blackman (2-38) helped dismiss the home team for 198 but the loss of early wickets scuppered any Ventnor hopes of a win as they managed only 99.
A weakened third team lost by six wickets to second placed Knights Valley in Hampshire League Division 3 South at Steephill. Only Alex Leon (30) and Mark Fletcher (21), made much impression as Ventnor totalled just 103, a target the visitors passed after 20 overs. Michael Compton took 3-58.
Open Day
The Club’s Open Day at Steephill on Sunday was a great success with more than 60 members attending from under 9’s to life and vice presidents! The ECB initiative, sponsored by Waitrose, will be repeated again next year.
