VentnorBlog: 8th In Top 50 Journalism Work Placements

We were really chuffed to find out this morning that VentnorBlog has been declared 8th in the Top 50 Journalism Work Placements.

We’re well out of league, sitting between the Evening Standard Londoner’s Diary beneath us and GQ.com above us.

Over the last five and a half years, we’ve had many young people spend time with VB on work experience through schools, colleges and internships.

VentnorBlog was nominated by Alex Varley-Winter, who readers will remember worked as an intern with VB last year.

Able to offer wide variety of experience
Alex’s first step into the world of VentnorBlog was covering a local town council election, recording and editing podcast interviews with candidates and vox pop podcasts with voters.

During her time with VB, Alex went onto cover music events (a clear passion of hers), planning issues, researching the impact of legal highs and produced many features on the council budget cuts in Feb/March last year and how they affected adult social care.

After leaving VB, Alex has had several internships with national newspapers such as the Guardian and Sunday Telegraph, as well as working with specialist magazines, so we were flattered to read what Alex had written about her time at VB.

“They’re so much more enthusiastic than anybody I’ve worked with and because they’re an extremely small team, very much open to giving interns experience running a website, editing podcasts and working on video in addition to going out and doing journalism in the community.”

Our doors are always open
Our last work experience student was Kyle Newton from Sandown High who spent a very productive week with VB in March.

During the NatWest Island Games, we have a very enthusiastic pupil from Carisbrooke High spending time with VB to find out what goes on behind the scenes of an online news publication.
