Ventnor Royal British Legion will be holding a parade on Sunday 3rd August to commemorate the beginning of the First World War.
The parade will start in Dudley Road at 2pm and will march through Ventnor Town Centre and along Belgrave Road and Park Avenue reaching the War Memorial by Ventnor Park at 3pm (the exact route will be varied dependent on the weather).
Relatives joining the service
The War Memorial has the names of the 113 Ventnor men who died during the War. There will be a short service at the War memorial with poems about the effect of war read by local people. Relatives of those who are named on the war memorial will be joining the service.
Danny McMeechan, Chairman of the Ventnor British Legion/Town Council Committee that has organised the event said,
“Our event commemorates the centenary of the beginning of a war in which many Ventnor men gave their lives. We hope local people will come and join us to see the parade but also to remember the consequences of what happened that August 1914.”
Taking part in the parade
The parade will be led by the Wight Diamonds Marching Band. The Ventnor, Newport and Seaview British Legions will be represented , as will military associations, including the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force. The Army Cadet Force and the Ryde Sea Cadets will join the march and one of the Boys’ Brigade members will wear his great-grandfather’s medals.
Several veterans of other wars will attend. Dignitaries from Ventor, including the Town Mayor, and from across the Island will attned the service.
