The Isle of Wight Met Service have issued a weather warning for strong winds later this week.
Valid from 2am to 1pm on Friday 23rd August, the warning reads:
A rather vigorous cyclonic system will push in from the west during Friday morning with southwesterly wind gusts of up to 60mph likely in some exposed parts of the south and west.
The parent system will closer to Iceland with secondary systems running around the southern side, and this particular system likely to run across Ireland and into northern England, bringing strong winds along its southern edge, especially through the English Channel.
Possible impacts, effects and measures
- Falling tree debris such as leaves, twigs, branches and perhaps even the odd downed tree in one or two spots along with tree debris on roads and walkways
- Danger to high sided vehicles travelling on the more exposed hill and coastal routes
- Risk to outdoor furniture and equipment, especially at outdoor events with gazebos and marquees potentially at risk
- Large waves around western and southern coasts and this will combine with spring tides, leading to overtopping of sea defences
- Delays and cancellations possible on cross Solent travel
