It’s wonderful to hear of instances when the gap between the young and old is bridged. One such situation that happened recently was when some of the young people at Grove Hill Further Education Centre spent time at Knight’s Court in Ventnor talking to the senior citizens. They all produced reports for the Assignment Lessons and the one below is by learner Matt Randall. Ed
On Friday 6th February I went to Knight’s Court with my assignments group. Knight’s Court is a block of flats where the elderly residents live.
The task was to hold a tea party with the elderly residents. We discussed what the topic was going to be and we chose ‘School Life.’
The reason we were doing the topic was to boost both our own and the elderly resident’s confidence as well as give the residents company.
We all introduced ourselves. We then had a conversation and asked questions, for example, ‘Who is your favourite celebrity?’ and the answer was ‘Wentworth Miller’ It was really interesting to listen to their history.
The lady I spoke to was Jean. She was a lovely lady with a good sense of humour. We talked about school life for an hour. We spoke about when she was little, what she did and which lessons she liked and her education.
I think the elderly residents enjoyed the company. We did, and I think it built our confidence up. Here are some of the comments from our group:
Amy: ‘It was a big achievement!’
William: ‘I felt the event was successful and a privilege to meet nice people.’
Luke:’ I found Knight’s Court interesting to understand about the old school life.’
The assignments tutors commented: ‘We are very proud of how the young people interacted! Some of them were a bit nervous at first but they did get over it!’
