Thanks to Clare for sharing this very positive news from West Wight Sports Centre. Ed
When West Wight Sports Centre member Mike Rayden heard that the Centre’s Isle of Wight Council grant was being cut and funds for essential maintenance were hard to find, he offered his services voluntarily to the Centre.
He has spent several Sundays painting the gym – ensuring the it remained open to the public thoroughout.
Mike, who has been a member for more than 10 years said
“This Sports Centre is so important to me and my wife, Denise – we enjoy the company of the other members and staff and it is an essential facility for the West Wight community. I know the pool was built by volunteers years ago and I want to give something back as well.”
Centre Manager Clare Griffin said,
“Mike is tremendous – he asked if he could paint the gym, which was an overdue job. I didn’t have the budget to do that so he said he’d do it himself in his own time. He’s just one of many volunteers who do so much for the West Wight Sports Centre. As a charity we are dependent on volunteers to help us and of course it was the inspirational team of volunteers who first built the pool. It is nice to know that we have never lost that old ethos and the community remains behind us, willing to muck in and help when we need them.”
