flood alert sign

Water level of Eastern Yar in Sandown continuing to rise, say Environment Agency

The Environment Agency have issued an update to their Flood Alert issued on Thursday.

The Flood Alert is still in for for the Eastern Yar and flooding is possible for Eastern Yar and tributaries from Whitwell to Bembridge.

Residents are warned to ‘Be prepared’. The warning reads:

The water level in the Eastern Yar is just peaking at Alverstone. At Sandown, it continues to rise.

Last night, a further 16mm of rain was recorded at Knighton. Road, cycle path and footpath flooding is expected.

At Alverstone, the river will be close to the top of the river bank, and out of bank flooding is expected at Langbridge. At Sandown, Golf Links Road and Moreton Common Road will be flooded.

Ditches around Fort Holiday Park will struggle to drain while the river is high. Property flooding is not currently expected.

Rain has now cleared the area, and Friday is forecast to be dry.

At Alverstone, the river level will begin falling later this morning (04/11/22).

At Sandown, the river will not peak until this evening (04/11/22). Further showers are forecast this weekend.

If these affect the area, river levels will be high throughout this period. We are operating the sluice at Bembridge to reduce water levels across Brading marshes.

Please ensure products used to protect gardens and property are operating.
