Gavin shares this latest news on behalf of Island Roads. Ed
The project is part of Island’s Roads’ comprehensive programme of work to improve and maintain structures – mostly bridges and retaining walls – across the Island.
The work at Turf Walk Footbridge, which spans Madeira Road and provides pedestrian access along the cliff top path to Totland Pier, involves the repair and refurbishment of the structure’s concrete piers and then the like-for-like replacement of the steel beams, parapets and timber decking.
Road and bridge closure
The work to dismantle and replace the bridge deck will require the closure of both the footpath and Madeira Road. Road closures will be undertaken overnight in order to reduce disruption.
The times of these closures have been agreed following consultation with local residents and businesses and are:
- 29/11/16 (Tues) – 10.00pm to 06.30am
- 05/12/16 (Mon) – 11.00pm to 06.30am
- 06/12/16 (Tues) – 11.00pm to 06.30am
- 12/12/16 (Mon) – 11.00pm to 06.30am
- 13/12/16 (Tues) – 11.00pm to 06.30am
- 14/12/16 (Weds) – 11.00pm to 06.30am
Ian Hodson, Island Roads’ Structures Manager, said:
“This necessary work will have an impact on both pedestrians and motorists, but we hope that by timing the works out-of-season, and also with a later-than-usual start time, we will keep this disruption to an absolute minimum.”
