A photo of three fridges dumped at Compton Beach car park spread across social media at the weekend.
Debi Heather posted the photo taken at 8am on Saturday morning of three commercial fridges/freezers that had been left at the beauty spot car park.
The photo was quickly circulated around Facebook, with suggestions being made that the items may have been dumped by someone who had gone out of business and couldn’t afford to have the fridges removed legally.
Good Samaritans
Geoff Underwood saw the photo and offered to pick them up and take them to the dump the next day.
However, another good Samaritan got there first, because when Geoff arrived at Compton on Sunday he found the fridges had already been removed.
Who removed the fridges?
OnTheWight got in touch with Island Roads to find out whether they removed the fridges, but they told us it wasn’t them.
So we tried the Isle of Wight council. They said it wasn’t them either.
Next stop Biffa. Not them either.
Undeterred, we carried on in our quest, next stop the landowners, the National Trust. Would you believe it, it’s wasn’t them either.
Any takers?
Our final port of call will be the Environment Agency. We’ll let you know whether it was them, but if you hear on the grapevine in the meantime that it was actually a good Samaritan keen to ensure this beauty spot is kept beautiful, do let us know.
Update 6.50am 6th Jan:
@SkunkApe on Twitter informs us that
“I believe original owners contacted the company that dumped them, and they then collected. Hopefully properly disposed of now!”
Just two weeks ago, someone dumped builders’ asbestos waste at Whale Chine.
