What is puzzling about the Isle of Wight’s KS2 2008 results – as already spotted by ‘rb’ on the previous article, What’s Behind The School Results for 11-year Old Islanders? – is that Trinity Middle and Archbishop King Middle School have been excluded from the tables.
In September 2008 they united as Christ the King College (which according to the DCSF tables “had no eligible pupils in 2008″).
However, at the time of the tests in May they were operating as two schools and should, surely, be included in the statistics for that year group.
Here’s what the DCSF (Department for Children Schools and Families) statement on publication of 2008 test and exam results, says (Statement of Intent, downloadable here):
Publishing the results of closed schools (KS3, KS4 and KS5 Tables)
17. In response to representations from schools and local authorities, the Secretary of State has decided that the Tables will include from 2008 the results of maintained secondary schools that closed during the reporting academic year.
As middle schools are classed as secondary schools, that suggests that KS2 results for Trinity and ABK should have been published.
The Island’s provisional results, which I saw in January (and which haven’t changed significantly in the final published version), did include the two schools, and while Trinity was near the top of the Isle of Wight table (just below Solent and Nodehill), ABK was close to the bottom.
Is that the real reason they are absent from the final tables? The gulf between the two was perhaps an embarrassment?
We’ll be getting in touch with the DCSF to find out the reason why the results for ABK and Trinity have not been included and will let you know the response once we receive it. Ed
