It’s been nearly four months since the steps down to one of the Island’s most popular beaches collapsed.
The steps and huge drainage pipe that runs underneath them at Hanover Point collapsed in January and have significantly deteriorated since.
Ready for the summer season?
Ian Winter, a local resident who regularly walks his dog on the beach, got in touch over the weekend, raising concern as to whether the steps would be repaired by the summer season.
What the council say
OnTheWight got in touch with the Isle of Wight council who told us,
“The council is pleased to confirm that new steps are due to be installed at Compton car park this week in order to reinstate public access to the beach in time for the bank holiday weekend.
“It should be noted that the steps are a temporary measure only while the long term plans for removal of the damaged outfall and repair works continue to be devised by Island Roads.
“Barriers have been erected around the damaged structure but the public should remain aware of the instability of the coastal slope and area generally.”
Cost of repairs
The cost to install the temporary beach access amounts to £2,350.
Island Roads will be able to advise the cost of repair to the outfall. We’ll update later once received.
We also contacted the National Trust, but at time of publishing had not heard back.
