As well as being St Arwald’s Day (see explanation here), today, 22nd April, is Earth Day.
This annual event, celebrated around the globe, marks the anniversary of what is widely considered “the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970”.
45 years strong
The idea of building a movement to ‘save the earth’ came from a then, US senator, Gaylord Nelson. He’d seen the fallout of the massive 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California and pulled together a team to help build a campaign. On 22nd April 1970 rallies took place across the US and news of the movement spread around the world.
Today, nearly half a century later, the movement continues to raise awareness with petitions, campaigns and rallies.
