Concern about the safety of a 44 year old woman led to Cowes RNLI lifeboat being alerted by Lee on Solent coastguards late this afternoon.
The woman was seen in an agitated state at Castle Point, East Cowes, and appeared to be trying to reach the shore of neighbouring Osborne Bay.
The coastguards were contacted by the police.
When the lifeboat, helmed by Kevin Richardson, arrived at the scene they found the woman, swimming fully clothed about 25 yards off the shore.
She was helped into the Atlantic 85 and taken to Trinity Landing, Cowes, where she was taken by ambulance to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport, escorted by a police car.
