For those who may recall this brilliant pianist who recently accompanied Jhelisa Anderson at Quay Arts, this is a chance to see Robert’s formidable talents combined with Cuban violin virtuoso, Omar Puente.
This relatively recent collaboration has already received amazing receptions for their international duo performances, which include Morocco, Belgium and a celebrated set at the Havana International Jazz Festival.
Electric violinist Omar Puente produces poised, elegant melodies combined with vigorous solos from his bowed instrument, interspersed with carefully positioned plucked passages supplying a textural quality to the duo sound. Robert Mitchell meanwhile is an extraordinarily dexterous, quicksilver-fast pianist, who delivers a mix of dramatically percussive and delicately tender styles to the whole.
Omar is now resident in England and teaches jazz violin at Leeds College of Music, but he learned Latin Jazz at the feet of Chu Cho Valdez and Arturo Sandoval and Cuban music from Ruben Gonzales and Guillermo Rubalcaba. The combination of these two superb talents should be enough set the evening alight.
