On the 14th April Fiona Thorpe from Yarmouth, took part in the Brighton Marathon to raise money for the Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust, a charity that takes young people, recovering from cancer, sailing to help them rebuild their confidence after long periods of treatment.
Fiona, who has run the Brighton Marathon once before in 2011, lined up with a record 9,110 other runners to take part in the 26-mile challenge. She explained why she chose to support the Trust, “I think it’s a fantastic charity fulfilling a very special and worthwhile role and I wanted to do a little bit to help. I also believe in supporting small, local charities so that you can see where your money is going.”
£800 raised so far
Having raised an impressive £800 so far, Fiona is aiming to keep fundraising over the summer to raise vital funds for both charities. From the £800 Fiona has already raised through generous donations, £500 will pay for a young person in recovery from cancer or leukaemia’s entire cost join the Trust’s four day summer sailing trip and every additional £20 will covering the cost of one young person’s victuals for one trip.
Launched in 2003 the aim of the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is to give young people in recovery from cancer the chance to rebuild their confidence through sailing. Celebrating their 10th year anniversary, the Trust has grown beyond every expectation into a national charity. Working with every young person’s primary cancer care unit in the UK, taking young people aged between 8-24 who are recovering from cancer and other serious illnesses on four-day sailing trips.
