Medina High School staff and students have been raising funds since the beginning of the year to raise awareness and support for the National AIDS Trust.
Throughout the year students have not only organised and performed in musical and drama concerts such as the Alice in the Arboretum and Summer soiree music events, but have also been bag packing in local supermarkets, and busking in Newport town centre.
Variety of missions
The year 11 student council set up a car valet service and a Wii tennis tournament, as well as a non-uniform day and an upcoming Christmas Bazaar as part of the Enrichment programme.
There has also been an extensive PSHE project to educate students about the facts and misnomers surrounding the AIDS disease, helping to break down stigma and ensure students keep themselves safe.
Musical a huge success
The culmination of the project is the upcoming school production of ‘Rent’ in early December; a re-telling of Puccini’s ‘La Boheme’ set in New York City.
The rock opera, which tells the story of a group of friends living under the shadow of the AIDS virus in the late 80s, is not only a premiere for the island but is also only the second performance in the UK in it’s school edition.
Sixth form student Harriet Lowe said “For the last Medina High School production before the reorganisation, the students felt it was important to go out with a bang; to not just produce another school production, but to raise awareness and make a difference.”
Considerable sum for charity
The proceeds from the fundraising will be donated straight to the National AIDS trust in early 2011, and so far promises to be a considerable sum.
To support the Medina NAT project, please either make a donation at the school site, or alternatively attend the Rent production on the 9th and 10th December at Medina Theatre.
