All leading Isle of Wight training providers and a number of local employers will be available to talk to young people and their parents about apprenticeships; what is involved and what is available.
There will be interactive tasks demonstrating some of the skills needed for a range of the opportunities that exist. There will also be details of a wide range current vacancies which people can apply for on the day. Small employers are also welcome to attend to find out how to take advantage of Government support to help them employ apprentices.
Mr Turner said:
“Sometimes young people have been led to believe that the only way to a successful career is though a university degree – that’s certainly not the case for everyone. Some people are academic while others are more practical and do better in a work-based training environment gaining qualifications recognised by employers across the country. It’s all about getting round pegs into round holes.
“The Government is working hard to promote apprenticeships and has created 1.6 million apprenticeship places since 2010, giving young people the experience and skills they need to build a career.
“I am putting this event on as I wanted to give Island young people, their parents and local employers an opportunity to find out more about apprenticeships and what is involved. It is being held on the same weekend as the Classic Car Show on Newport Quay so we expect it will be quite busy.”
Training providers at the event will be HTP Training, Smart Training & Recruitment, Isle of Wight College, Care Learning Centre and FNTC Training. Representatives from the Isle of Wight Council will also be on hand to provide information and guidance on their pre-apprenticeship programme.
