Young surfer from the Isle of Wight rides high with England U16 at European Championships: Here’s how you can help

Jago Tasker, who lived in Freshwater until last year, has been picked for the England Surfing Team for the U16 boys team at the European Surfing Championship in Portugal this July 2024.

Learning to surf from the age of eight on the Isle of Wight, Jago still has very close connection to the Island and the Isle of Wight Surf Club.

Dan and Sarah, Jago’s parents have started a GoFundMe page to help him get there.

They explained,

Jago paddled into his first waves on the Isle of Wight at 8 years old where he learnt to surf. He was always in the Ocean having fun, surfing right through the Winter months at that young age, on second hand boards his dad found for him. Jago got the competition bug just after his 9th birthday, when he competed in the Surfing England Inter Clubs competition at Fistral Beach, Newquay, Cornwall, as a member of Isle of Wight Surf Club in their Junior team.”

Great ranking in the Nationals
Jago’s family have dedicated countless hours to supporting Jago in his passion for the sport. The family relocated to Cornwall in the winter of 2022 and he is now a member of Newquay Boardriders Surf Club.

He ranked #3 at this year’s U16 Nationals and most recently took #2 at Surfing England’s Rip Curl Grom Search UK event. He has a smooth surfing style, and as he gets stronger his surfing is only going to get more powerful.

Representing England
Jago represented England at the International Surfing Association World Junior Championships in El Salvador earlier this year whilst juggling his GCSE exams. Both the Worlds and European Championships will be key to his future development.

His family say,

“The best waves of his life are still out there and we’d love to see him keep power surfing alive!”

Why they need your help
The family go on to say,

Competing at your first European Championship is a significant step in anyone’s athletic career, but also an opportunity to inspire other young surfers to pursue sports. Particularly those areas with low representation.

“Unfortunately, funding for such trips is limited, and we need to raise £1,000 having already spent a significant amount for the World Championships earlier this year.

“Expenses include:

  • Travel expenses to Portugal
  • Accommodation
  • Coaching
  • Equipment
  • Specific surf competition travel insurance”

The impact of your support
The family add that a contribution, no matter the size, will directly impact Jago’s ability to compete at international level.

By supporting him, you are not only helping him achieve his dreams, but also promoting the future potential of regional representation in surfing.
