Jonathan Legge

Police name man who died in Whippingham crash

This in from police in their own words. Our thoughts are with Mr Legge’s family and friends. Ed

Police are now in a position to name the driver who died following a road traffic collision in East Cowes.

Jonathan Legge Jonathan Legge, 46, of Kings Road, East Cowes, was pronounced dead following the two vehicle collision on Whippingham Road, just after 8pm on March 1.

His family have today paid tribute to him. His estranged wife Pam said:

“Jon, who was known as Leggy to most of his friends in Australia, held his family and friends very close to his heart.

“He always carried a cheeky grin and when he appeared you always knew there was a funny story to be told or practical joke to be had.

“To me he was a loving partner and husband and we spent ten years together living in Australia and the Isle of Wight.

“When it was just me and him it seemed we were in our perfect world.

“He was a loving step-father to my three children who are devastated by his loss. We are all feeling a huge loss and sadness.

“Jon, the stories you told and the hilarious memories we shared will be with us forever. We all love you and you will be forever with us.”

Mr Legge was the driver of a Vauxhall Corsa. The other car involved in the collision was a Land Rover.

The driver of the Land Rover, a 44-year-old man, was taken by road ambulance to St Mary’s Hospital. He suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries and remains in hospital.

Not exactly good news is it? The council always ran and paid for crossing patrols, now they say ‘not us Guv’ expecting someone else to pay.

Nope The Sciolist you are right it is not good news, however, when the council is having it’s funding cut by central government as much as it is what do you expect. The problem with the Island is that you all vote Tory, expect to pay naff all in taxes and get gold plated public services, it don’t work like that. Vote blue you get poo. Live… Read more »

Oh yes, I forgot about the wicked Tories and their savage cuts. Are you seriously suggesting the two Ed’s will save our lollipops if they get elected in May? You’re dreaming. The last Labour government ran the economy to ruin, the current shadow cabinet are equally stupid, except this time the electorate knows better. We can’t keep on borrowing, something has to give. If your lot were… Read more »

Every single labour government we’ve ever had has left our economy worse off when they left, than it was when they took office. They are quite simply bl**dy useless when it comes to financial matters. History does not lie. Borrow, spend on cr*p, borrow, spend on benefits, borrow, spend on immigrants. They are another disaster waiting in the wings. God help us, even more so if they… Read more »

Lord B is right- history does not lie!

1997-2008 (Under Brown)
National debt to GDP ratio remains below that inherited from Major Government

2010-2015 (Under Osborne)
National Debt to GDP ratio increases
GDP increases by 20%
National debt increases by 79% in 5 years
2010 0.76 trillion
2015 1.36 trillion

Nice swerve there cicero, but you fail to include my correct comment regarding you lefties. Labour have left us up poo creek financially, after every single one of their terms in Number 10.

I’m no tory lover, but Osborne has had little choice after you labour clowns burnt down the circus tent with your usual financial shenanigans.

Facts not opinions Lord B. The UK is £60 trillion worse off after five years of financial management by the Eton Mess- and still their friends in the City are well protected by thm.

Just watched Balls on Newsnight last night. Utter shambles of a man, who may hold the purse come May to the UK economy.

Jesus wept. We are doomed if this fool and his party kin get voted in.

FAO The Sciolist: I am 100% confident that if the next central government does not have the Tories involved then yes local government will have more money than if the tories are returned to power. Are you denying that the tory central government has reduced the amount of money that that the IWC has? Do you really expect the council to continue providing the same range of… Read more »

If the next governemt were to be a Labour, Scots, Irish coalition then maybe it would. But much of it would be borrowed.

And factually, the IOW council will not disclose the total it has to spend, so we can’t see if it is as they claim. Cuts, what cuts? They only tell us the grant sum, not the total cash received.

Cuts what cuts? So are you still trying to deny that the IWC has had a reduction in its central government funding and consequently its overall budget? The council’s budget is derived from 4 main sources of income; council tax (central government is dictating that local government can’t increase their council tax by more than 1.99% without a referendum), business rates, central government grant, and fees and… Read more »

Sorry Dave, I have repeatedly asked councillors who regularly post here to tell us the figures, in money. I do so again. How much is the actual cash reduction from ALL sources of income? Answer came none because to reveal the figure would end the myth about cuts.

sciolist: I think many/most people have understood the position we are in. The information is in the public domain and also explained quite fully at the road shows held around the Island. To be clear. Our total income for the year 2015 – 16 will be £13.5M less than we need to maintain services at the level of 2014 – 15. For 2016 – 17 (the following… Read more »

Oh come on, you have got to be happy about this one, Tory boy! Commonsense has prevailed, our kids can be safe, just like we were when we were young. Less road accidents! This social programme is one of the most underestimated in value out of many. Now we have been told it is guaranteed to continue. Mr Bacon as leader of the council has assured us… Read more »

It’s a shame that not all media outlets checked with the IWC before creating mass hysteria. For goodness sake in some countries the parents act as school crossing volunteers. Perhaps Newport Parish Council with their stash of £140,000 would like to contribute….

I think that a volunteer lollipop patrol would have been the perfect solution.. I am sure that many Parents would be more than happy to jump in.. BUT, of course all volunteers are perceived as ‘dodgy’ etc. and need to pay for their record checks and need insurance et al! In other words the current legislation prevents well meaning, caring individuals from helping out and leaves it… Read more »

Why shouldn’t parents volunteer to do this? After all, it’s their kids that are being protected by crossing patrols?

Unless, most are either A) driving the kids to school, pulling up on the hatch markings to drop the little darlings off with seconds to spare B) At home in the warm watching breakfast TV. C) Out working.

I expect that a good proportion of parents are out at work and have commitments to more than one child. I also expect they rightly think that the council tax they pay would cover the small cost of the patrols.

If everything is going to be put out to volunteers, then no-one gets paid for anything.

You want to volunteer to do your job for nothing?
