Green MEP calls for day of ‘free public transport’ to combat air pollution

This in from the MEP for the South East, Keith Taylor’s office. Ed

The recommendation follows Paris’s example where the authorities made public transport free during a smog episode last year.

In previous pollution alerts France also imposed a reduced speed limit for traffic.

Alongside this the Mayor reduced city centre access for vehicles alternating with odd and even registration numbers. Similarly the Mayor is also talking about removing diesel vehicles (which are responsible for particulate emissions and NO2) completely.

Effects of air pollution
Experts have recently suggested that the death toll from air pollution, usually put at around 29,000 a year in the UK, could be substantially higher because of the effect of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), emitted during fossil fuel burning, which up until now has not been taken into account.

Next Thursday, 16th April, the Government are being taken to court by Environmental group Client Earth over consistently high levels of air pollution that break EU rules.

Government must act
Keith Taylor Green MEP for South East England said:

“Measures such as making public transport free for the day should be considered during serious smog episodes in Britain such as the one we’re experiencing today. Previous actions taken in Paris shows they recognise the unrest caused by air pollution and that they are prepared to take action.

“The Green Party has been warning everyone for years about the serious health problems that are associated with air pollution.

“How many deaths does it have to take before the Government will properly act?”

Yes Tanja, including testing of energy and CO2 saving

The Romans used to offer free bread and circuses to the masses.
Now an EU MEP wants to offer free public transport For a day to the masses.
Anything free is good to keep the unemployed starving masses in Europe from rioting.
Bring it on

Yes, Ewald. that’s a good idea too! Even better would it be if this Island (and country) invested in building a comprehensive cycle network so that people where possible can commute to work by bike. Electric bikes are making this option more and more attractive, even over hilly terrain and longer distances, but the infrastructure needs to be there first… The current Government is talking about large-scale… Read more »

A comprehensive cycle network is an excellent idea, something to similar in the Netherlands would be fantastic. I just hope cyclists would use them though, and not clog up our main roads like now (even though we have cycle paths for them to use). Worst culprits are those cyclists between Cowes-Newport. They have a nice, scenic 5 mile purpose-built pathway for them to use, yet us motorists… Read more »

? 1.Plenty of cyclists & walkers, me included, prefer to use that traffic free route between those two towns. Those choosing to use the road are not necessarily refusing to use the path; it may simply be that their particular journeys make it more convenient/shorter/faster to use that road, or part of it, for those particular journeys. I have done so myself. 2.Even if cyclists choose to… Read more »

How much more preventable illness & death are we prepared to tolerate in order to maintain our lifestyle as careless consumers & destroyers of our precious finite resources? It’s impossible to ignore the fact that we are seriously damaging our only life support system; increasingly poisoning our air, soil, & water, harming people & planet, & destroying life & ecosystems evolved over thousands or millions of years… Read more »

Fully agree, also I prefer walking and buses, but we need to save energy to avoid running out of fossils in the near future. Fossil’s are needed for medicine by coming generations and renewables will allow individuals on e_bike and shared e_cars….. Totally agree with the current governments luck to no select the right commercial futuristic innovations…. Go to Shanghai and see the future as well as many… Read more »

Greens should feel encouraged, people are getting really fed up with Labour, Tories and liberals. After the disastrous backfire caused by Fallon. The mood is really changing and people are going to vote for who they think is best.

The Western World needs Change desperately…..
the only real change would start if the Green party gets hold of the Defence Ministry and the Exchequer…..

I was in Paris just three weeks ago and free public transport was in operation then due to air pollution. This civilised measure was, of course, only possible because the French realise that public transport is too important to be flogged off to profiteering private sector outfits, as has happened here. If the British authorities wanted to try it, there would be endless wrangling about “compensation” for… Read more »

Sustainable, affordable and eco-friendly transportation makes even more sense in a small crowded country like ours. Having the option of using cheap, frequent, reliable public transport drastically reduces the number of cars on the roads (& the demand for more road building in what remains of our green & pleasant land). It also improves air quality, & benefits those making journeys on less crowded roads. And the… Read more »

Ah – the sound of the responding Greens – go to China and see what’s done there, go to France and see what’s done there. I think it’s excellent that these environmentally-aware types are travelling around the globe experiencing all of these cultures and different ways of living for us. Let’s just hope they’re not flying to these destinations, using the most polluting method of transport available,… Read more »

@ThomasC “Ah – the sound of the responding Greens – go to China and see what’s done there, go to France and see what’s done there.”

A friend has recently moved from Beijing- where she had lived for 10 plus years- to Singapore because Beijing pollution has become so bad that it was affecting her health and trapped her in her apartment some days.

TC – no, air travel probably wasn’t limited that day, & doing so ought to help because lots of flights are consuming lots of fossil fuel oil, etc., etc., but there’s another worrying addition to the equation now because of the reported temperature rise in the US during the days following the 9/11 attack when all flights were banned, temporarily removing the cooling ‘mirror’ effect of the… Read more »

Well said, Mike Starke! Call me old-fashioned, but I believe in good taxes and good services. Public Transport should be publicly owned and affordable – not run for profit. The same should go for our Health Service, Fire Service, Police Service and Mail Service. To me it is common sense to work for the common good. And the ones most likely to work for the common good… Read more »

Forgot to say that the taxes should be progressive – naturally. The inequality in this country is shameful. Where has the idea of the common good gone to? It urgently needs to be reclaimed…

How green is “Green” A typical double decker bus produces in the order of 1400g CO2/km. A modern diesel family car produces 120g CO2/km, therefore 11 cars produce less emissions than 1 bus. So a bus with 11 or fewer passengers is less environmentally friendly than 11 driver only cars. If the 11 cars have 4 passengers (including driver) then the bus will need more than 44… Read more »

@ Suruk: That is why I prefer trains/trams/pod cars, powered by renewable energy sources. Electric cars (and bikes) in all honour, but trains/trams/pod cars take more people and if responsibly powered would save us more.

@ Isle of Wight Council: Are you now devising a plan to get the trains/trams/pod cars back on the Island by 2030? Where there’s a will there’s a way…
