Those of you following the live coverage of the full council meeting on Wednesday night will have seen that the Isle of Wight council (IWC) once again refused to sign up the to 10:10 reducing carbon emissions agreement.
The motion was raised by Cllr Geoff Lumley (for the third time), who expressed a hope that as the new coalition government had committed to the agreement, that the Conservative led IWC would follow suit and make a saving of £415,000 in the process (figures provided to him by officers of the IWC).
He argued that the savings could be used to keep Westmoinster House open and the remainder go towards supporting other care services on the Island for culnerable people.
Alas, despite Cllr Fuller seconding the proposal, and Cllr Bacon asking “Whatever the saving, why would you not sign up for this? If there’s a chance to save something, how could you object?”, the Tory block vote reigned, with 18 voting against the resolution to sign up to the agreement.
The decision by the IWC left many of us wondering “what the heck has happened to Eco Island?”
