10:10 Carbon Reduction Agreement Rejected by Isle of Wight Council Again

Isle of Wight Council Reject 10:10 AgreementThose of you following the live coverage of the full council meeting on Wednesday night will have seen that the Isle of Wight council (IWC) once again refused to sign up the to 10:10 reducing carbon emissions agreement.

The motion was raised by Cllr Geoff Lumley (for the third time), who expressed a hope that as the new coalition government had committed to the agreement, that the Conservative led IWC would follow suit and make a saving of £415,000 in the process (figures provided to him by officers of the IWC).

He argued that the savings could be used to keep Westmoinster House open and the remainder go towards supporting other care services on the Island for culnerable people.

Alas, despite Cllr Fuller seconding the proposal, and Cllr Bacon asking “Whatever the saving, why would you not sign up for this? If there’s a chance to save something, how could you object?”, the Tory block vote reigned, with 18 voting against the resolution to sign up to the agreement.

The decision by the IWC left many of us wondering “what the heck has happened to Eco Island?”

They are making ‘planned and sensible’ carbon reductions (Cllr Giles, Tory), presumably unlike the coalition Con-Dem government in which his party has signed up to 10%. And they ‘can’t save any more’ on emissions (again Cllr Giles).

Welcome to my world, where Cameron & Clegg’s cosiness is ignored at local level.

And local Tories think we have a Conservative government………but that’s another story !

how can they be making planned and sensible reductions yet be unable to save any more on emissions? Does Con now stand for Contradiction? Lets face it though, this council has repeatedly opposed wind turbines, their only visible effort to eco island seems to be some toilets that use rain water, and as far as I know the only wind turbine on the island powers the toilets… Read more »

There’s nothing stopping the people and businesses of the island signing up to 10:10 (giving two fingers to the ruling council in the process). Go to http://www.1010global.org/uk

Well said, sadly there is more support and enthusiasm from ordinary residents on the Island than the Council’s ruling group.

Eco Island is only wheeled out when it makes the council look good and might secure them some funding for some other activity.

Well that is certainly the view of a minority of scientists and worth considering while we watch Rome burn

10:10 is about saving resources and reducing CO2 which in no imaginable way can be a bad thing and can only be a good thing….its simple really

Did the IOW Council read the BBC who’ve reported that temperatures HAVE NOT RISEN since 1995? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8511670.stm What few know, is that much of the rise from 91 to 95 was an anomaly caused by the shut down of weather stations in Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union. As many politicians have said, never let a crisis go to waste. And the temperature was far… Read more »
