Renewed Calls For IWC To Sign up to 10:10 Agreement

The 10:10 Carbon Reduction Agreement is back on the agenda at the Isle of Wight Council (IWC).

IWC Urged to Sign Up To 10:10 CampaignReaders may remember VB reporting last year that the IWC chose not to sign up for the agreement to cut the Council’s carbon emissions by 10% by the end of 2010.

Due to the change of Government and the commitment of the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition to reduce Government emissions by 10% within the next year, Labour councillor Geoff Lumley has once again tabled a motion requesting the IWC do the same.

Savings could save Westminster House
This time, he is suggesting that the significant savings could be diverted to saving Westminster House from closure.

The motion will be considered at the next full council meeting on 16th June.

Cllr Lumley’s motions reads ….

Now that the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government has committed to reducing government carbon emissions by 10% within the next year, the Isle of Wight Council now agrees to do similar, with consequent savings (advised in February 2010 as up to £410k in a full year) to be channelled into retaining the Westminster House care facility (£215k per annum) and lessening the first year grant cutbacks to independent providers working with vulnerable people as personal budgets are phased in.

We’ll let you know how the vote goes.
