12-inch water main bursts in Ryde (updated)

A 12-inch water main has burst at the junction of Smallbrook Lane and Great Preston Road in Ryde.

The water broke out of the road tarmac, covering Great Preston Road.

A team is in place to deal with it.

3,000 properties affected
At its peak, Southern Water tell OnTheWight that this will have affected around 3,000 properties. They are working to reroute supplies to bring water in from other areas.

Some residents in Ryde experienced a loss of water supply last week, this is affecting a different set of houses the water company tells us.

Traffic disruption
The junction is often used as a means of getting into and out of the Ryde area, so traffic disruption is expected.

Southern Water have a team on site at the junction of Smallbrook Lane and Great Preston Road and have rezoned the water to most of our customers.

Understanding discolouration in their water
As supplies fully restore customers may experience some discolouration to their water. Rest assured this is perfectly safe to use.

Drinking water can sometimes appear ‘milky’ or ‘cloudy’ when first drawn from the tap. This is usually caused by air and generally disappears after a short time.

If your water is white, milky or cloudy fill a glass with water and leave to stand for a few minutes. If the cloudiness clears from the bottom of the glass upwards, this shows the cloudy appearance has been caused by air. The tiny air bubbles will rise to the surface and the cloudy appearance will disappear. If the water does not clear in this way, please contact us.

Why water might be brown
You may find that your tap water looks slightly brown. This is because some water mains are made of iron and over time rust deposits can settle in the pipes.

This can happen for a number of reasons, for example; a burst on the water main; bringing a water main back into use after repairs; having to move water from one area to another to cope with changes in demand; the fire service taking a lot of water to deal with an emergency.

Southern Water ask that those affected accept their apologies for any inconvenience caused.
