12 Isle of Wight families rehomed after unprecedented flooding: Unclear how many more affected

At least 12 Isle of Wight families have had to be rehomed following devastating flooding.

As heavy rain and high tides hit the Island last Wednesday, coastal and flash flooding saw businesses and homes deluged with water.

In the aftermath, some households have had to be evacuated into temporary accommodation as their houses are uninhabitable.

The Isle of Wight council says it has rehoused four families, three of whom are from Ryde.

Unclear how many people affected
Speaking yesterday (Wednesday) Darren Steed, the council’s resilience coordinator, said the authority was still trying to determine how many homes were uninhabitable as some people chose to stay in their properties, but may move out once their insurance is sorted.

Councillor Karen Lucioni said most of the people affected in her ward of Ryde Monktonmead have moved in with friends and families and others had found temporary accommodation through their insurance.

Another eight households
Housing association SNG, formerly Sovereign, has confirmed eight of its households are currently in short-term accommodation due the floods, close to their homes, while medium-term housing is sought.

Helen Hann, SNG’s assistant localities director, said their teams had been working tirelessly to support customers affected by the unprecedented flooding.

She said,

“We are working as quickly as we can with our insurers and partners to enable people to move back in as soon as possible.”

SNG is also covering food expenses for the eight households and offering wider support.
