There’s just a couple of weeks left to catch the evolving exhibition by Isle of Wight artist Paul Woods at Quay Arts. Thanks to Georgia for the reminder, Ed
Elevation brings various elements and ideas together. The works displayed have been (and continue to be) assembled within a six month period.
Everything is created from recycled materials collected from streets and building sites around the Island.
Reluctant to work from a blank canvas, Paul Woods finds that reclaimed materials contain built-in character and history.
“Nothing is ever finished – I consider everything as a sketch.”
Rarely making preliminary drawings or models, Woods builds according to images in his head and to sets of self-imposed constraints. The works have a feeling of simplicity and spontaneity, regardless of how long they may have taken to produce.
“One thing which binds everything I do is subversion. Apart from that, I like to mix disciplines, blur boundaries, and nudge the observer into a reaction. Much of my work is discomforting, some provocative. A lot of it is a kind of story-telling, while visually I will never escape my fascination with the fantastic. Exploration is everything.”
Elevation runs until Saturday 12th March (Closed 10th March) Mon to Sat 10am to 4pm West Gallery, Quay Arts, Newport, Isle of Wight
