As the Met Office’s amber severe weather warning comes to an end for the Isle of Wight, many are breathing a huge sigh of relief.
The weather station at The Needles recorded winds of 106mph, so it’s little wonder Islanders were worried about their homes and gardens being battered overnight.
Flooding inevitable
In the last 12 hours flood alerts have been issued for the Eastern Yar and tributaries from Whitwell to Bembridge, Monktonmead Brook, as well as Gurnard Luck.
All were expected to be subject to some form of flooding and there were several roads affected by flooding.
Many trees down
Storm Katie has certainly kept Island Roads and their contractor busy over the last 24 hours.
The storms resulted in trees down on the carriageway across the Island including; Quarry Road, Ryde, Rowborough Lane, Newport Shute, Merston Lane, Hale Common, Beacon Alley, Whitcombe Road, Macketts Lane, Knighton Shute, Nettlecombe Lane, Cowleaze Hill, Undercliff Drive, Bouldnor Road, New Barn Road, Fairlee Road, Main Road Shalfleet, Church Road Binstead, Forest Road, Shanklin Road Godshill, Staplers Road and Newport Road Ventnor.
Power failures
Many properties across the Island are still without power including those in PO36, PO33, PO30, PO37 and parts of PO38 postcode areas.
Cross-Solent travel
Not surprisingly, the storm also affected cross-Solent travel.
Hovertravel, Red Funnel and Wightlink all had to suspend services and manage the inevitable delays that followed.
We hope the storm didn’t result in too much damage for you.
