Ventnor Retains Blue Flag: Update

News reaches us this evening that Ventnor beach has once again been awarded Blue Flag status as well as the Quality Coast Award. We have not been able to clarify this with Encams yet, but have it on good authority that the Blue Flag can continue to fly high over Ventnor for another year.

Ventnor Blue Flag Flies High on YouTubeReaders will remember that Ventnor was awarded the Blue Flag last year after a break of five years.

A number of criteria need to be met before a Blue Flag is awarded including stringent tests on water quality, the presence of paid life guards, sufficient recycling as well as education initiatives – something which is fulfilled by the Coastal Centre Rockpool Surveys.

We’re not sure whether the Blue Flag just stays up or whether there’ll be another hoisting by David Pugh, but will be sure to let you know if we hear.

UPDATE: Congratulations also to Sandown who received the other Blue Flag for the Island.

If you missed the ceremony last year, check out this video by local film-maker, David George who kindly filmed and edited the hoisting ceremony for VB.

Many thanks to Mark for the heads up of the news.

Just been looking at the criteria for a blue flag beach (http://www.blueflag.org/Menu/Criteria) and at least some aspects of the Beach Information boards that have appears over the winter are required in those criteria, so perhaps the blame for these boards should not totally be heaped on IWC.

The requirements are pretty strict, so all credit to everyone for passing.

The list has now been published, and there are now only two blue flags for the island, Sandown and Ventnor. Shanklin has lost its status this year.

Playing devil’s advocate here but do you suppose the average bather/beach user actually cares a jot what some organisation based in copenhagen thinks about our beaches? I’m prepared to bet it won’t keep them away from Shanklin in July and august!

Congratualations to the lady who cleans up the beach every morning and is one of the happiest people in Ventnor. If it were not for her dilligence, there would be all manner of rubbish down there.
