RUMOUR: Is The Ventnor Coastal Centre Being Sold Off? (updated)

It’s been suggested that the Isle of Wight Council may be in advanced discussions with a property developer to sell off the Ventnor Coastal Visitor Centre (VCVC).

Will Ventnor Coastal Centre Go To Developers?A post on the VB Forum last night claimed that staff from the VCVC will be relocated to the Ventnor Botanic Gardens.

We contacted the Isle of Wight Council just after nine this morning and are awaiting their reply. We’ll update this story when we hear back. See statement from IWC below.

Tenants given notice
Our source tells us that the Natural History & Archaeological Society, who are based at the VCVC, have been given notice to leave the building. They also said that enquiries have been made to re-locate the IWC staff who work in the building.

Iconic statement
There’s no denying that the building hold a dominant position in the town.

Some may feel it is an eyesore inherited from the Victorian building boom, but for others it is an iconic statement of the progression during that period which transformed Ventnor from a sleepy cove into a vibrant town and holiday destination.

Many would be concerned about the fate of the building and what may replace it.

A number of residents regularly use the parking at the back of the building overnight due to lack of parking in the area, and the public green space surrounding the building is regularly used by children and dog walkers.

Disposal of property
We’re all aware of the fact that the IWC are keen to dispose of a percentage of their property commitments, so the rumour of a possible sale is not unsurprising.

We’ll start digging and see what other information we can find.

Update: This just in from the IWC

Barry Cooke, Head of Strategic Asset Management at the Isle of Wight Council said: “As part of the council’s accommodation rationalisation programme, all property assets are being reviewed including the Coastal Visitor Centre in Ventnor.

“The purpose of the process is to make sure the council uses its properties as efficiently as possible in order to give best value to residents. However, the property review is an ongoing process and no decision has yet been taken in respect of the visitor centre.

“Any such decision will be taken via the democratic processes of the council. The council is categorically not in discussions with any potential buyer of the site.”

…..the truth in rumours!! I suggested some 10 years ago that Ventnor wake up and see what developers had in store for Ventnor’s prime coastal properties and land. I predicted then the next targets for developers might be the Winter Gardens, La Falaise, I’m don’t think I mentioned the Coastal Centre specifically – but it was another obvious location. (Let’s not forget the former public land now… Read more »

Beryl, regarding your comment about real estate interests of VTC members and the Winter Gardens; Since the last election there has been ongoing innuendo to suggest that some of the new crop of Ventnor Town councillors have self-serving agendas regarding the future of the Winter Gardens. There is no evidence to support this, except for the hastily drawn inferences and rumour-mongering of those that perceive a loss… Read more »

Well said CB.

Beryl, I believe that your comments about the current council are based on a considerable amount of mis-information – perhaps derived from some of the malicious rumours that have been going around the shops and pubs in town. I hope that they are able to prove you and others wrong.

The Natural History and Archaeological Society has contacted its members to say that they have to leave Salisbury Gardens by the beginning of May. They also request detail of any premises that might be available for an office, library and storage space.
See http://www.iwnhas.org for contact details.

I’ll wait for real news rather than gossip, but it’s true that the IW Natural History and Archaeological Society are being asked to move out, which looks bad. I’m not hopeful on past performance either. The Council have never really publicised the Coastal Centre. There isn’t a flyer for it, it’s barely signposted, and it isn’t funded enough for it to open at all peak times like… Read more »

I don’t understand how the IW Council can say that “No decision has been made regarding the VCVC” when other occupants, such as the IWNH&AS, have been told when they have to leave. I think the Council is trying to confuse people about where the VCVC might be re-located and avoiding the real issue which is that the building will be up for sale. I have a… Read more »

Because they spent (wasted) the surplus they inherited, mostly on consultants they ignored and now have to sell their assets to break even
