We’ve always been really impressed with the variety of work Island artist, Martin Swan, reveals at each of his exhibitions.
From the classic marine work to the wonderful abstract and now his latest exhibition, Fieldwork.
The collection of works are a homage to the landscapes of the Isle of Wight, which in his 60th year, Martin says he has received great pleasure from.
Two years’ work
Martin has spent two years developing the collection, working directly in the landscape, which takes us on a journey across the Isle of Wight through the seasons.
He says, “After years of studio-based work, I’ve rediscovered the joys and challenges of painting outside. I’ve always loved walking and it seemed a way to share my joy in the Island through my work.”
We understand that most of the work was painted in situ and the larger works developed in the studio based on his field sketches.
“It has been wonderful to return to the basics of observational painting and I’m looking forward to continuing with this work.” said Martin.
The exhibition takes place in the Rope Store Gallery of Quay Arts Centre in Newport from Friday 11th March until Saturday 30th April.
There is a drinks preview on Thursday 10th March between 6-8pm.
