Work to restore the iconic Totland Pier is underway.
Following the attempt to sell the pier through auction back in 2008, it was subsequently sold privately, with the new owner making a promise that he would restore the pier.
Former owner, artist Derek Barran (listen to interview with Derek), has moved his studio out of the building on the end of the pier and today, the wooden structure is in the process of being disassembled.
Complete restoration
We understand that the restoration will include new pilings, steelwork, fabrication etc, bringing the much-loved pier back to its former glory.
Although the owner is still awaiting planning permission to build on the end of the pier, we reckon the new structure will look fantastic.
It’s brilliant that the pier is going to saved. The previous owner swore twelve years ago that he would find someone with the funds to take care of the restoration, and it now appears that he’s achieved that goal. Well done to all involved.
