Residents are invited to an opening event tomorrow (Saturday 1st June) at Castle Copse in East Cowes.
Ceremonies will begin at 11am and will be followed until 2pm by entertainment including mini-beast safaris and a nature hunt, woodcrafts and flint knapping. Everything is free and there will be food and drink too!
The small woodland that sits between Sylvan Avenue and St. James Church was recently acquired by Island 2000 Trust and Natural Enterprise.
Over the next year, they will be beavering away to restore the woodland for people and wildlife.
Carol Flux from group said,
“I’m sure you’ll already know that the woodland is a fantastic haven for wildlife, a home to bats, badgers, red squirrels, slow worms and many butterflies, birds and flowers. Over 616 species of invertebrates have also been found there.
“Castle Copse is made up of a variety of tree species, many are still quite young and will be given room to grow and mature but there are in amongst them seven wonderful old veteran oaks full of nooks and crannies and draped in ivy. These are important landmarks and exceptional habitats.
“But it’s not just for the animals, birds and bugs! We are very keen to encourage local people to visit and enjoy the woodland too. Plans are now in place and underway to improve paths and access, install new seats, plant new trees and provide on-site information for visitors.”
