funtasia burned out bins

Biffa waives Funtasia’s bill over vandalised bins (updated)

Readers may remember the recent Funtasia Fun Day, although successful on the day, was marred by the vandalism of Biffa bins left on site.

It was initially thought that organisers of the event would need to find at least £3,500 to cover the cost of the bins which were set on fire by vandals in the early hours of the morning.

Upon hearing news of the vandalism and possible costs to the fun day organisers (Kellie Lawrence and Mandy Fuller from Daisy Chains IW), the community rallied around, with suppliers to the fun day saying they’d cancel their invoices, residents donating cash and even an online auction organised.

Biffa asked to waive costs
Mandy Fuller one of the organisers told OnTheWight,

“Melvyn at the Newport office liaised very hard with the head office and managed to get them to waive the fees for us, which we were very grateful for.”

This along with the many Islanders getting in touch with Biffa asking if they could reduce the cost of their bill seems to have worked, as Biffa have agreed to wipe the slate completely clean and the charity fun day organisers will no longer need to raise several thousand pounds to pay for the vandals’ damage.

Organisers also confirmed a few days ago that council contractors, John O’Connor Ltd, offered to make the ground good at the park for no charge.

Well done to everyone who has rallied around to help this vital Island charity. More to follow shortly on the ongoing fundraising efforts.
