Carole Dennett and Andrew Turner

Private Eye on Andrew Turner: A Wight Mess

Andrew Turner makes top story in the latest Private Eye’s HP Sauce column, finding itself in a hard-to-avoid position on the facing page of page seven, right under the HP Sauce logo (HP = Houses of Parliament in this case).

It’s an extensive piece, referring to how local activists sought an inquiry into how Andrew “pocketed more than £100,000 of public money for his five-bedroom Georgian house on the Island by designating it as his second home, even while boasting elsewhere that it was his main residence.”

We recommend that you buy Private Eye (frankly, we recommend that everyone buys Private Eye) to read the whole article, but to get an idea of the placement of the article and its size, we did a short video to show it. We’ve placed this at the bottom of this piece.

Excerpts
Below are further section of the article

  • “Turner’s general election campaign, due to be launched this month, is now in chaos.”
  • “Tory votes were already leeching rapidly on the Island because of the outrage at the massive refurbishment of Seal House.” (his five-bedroom house in Newport)
  • “His campaign manager and election agent have quit, and members are resigning in droves”

On Carole Dennett
Carole Dennett features equally highly in the article with the following:

  • “… running his office in a manner reminiscent of Lady Macbeth.”
  • “It is she who oversees everything which comes out of that office, including any verbal statements made by Turner: since his stroke in 2006 he has to read from scripts prepared in advance.”
  • Talking of Carole, “she reigns supreme in her ex-fience’s office”
  • “… many activists say they won’t work on Turner’s campaign if Dennett and Finney are involved.”

There’s audio on it too, which you can hear by clicking on the speaker icon in the bottom right of the video.
