St helens fort walk

Bembridge Fort Walk 2016 date revealed (St Helens too!)

If you’re planning on taking part, read our guide of important things you should know first.

This coming weekend sees the likely return of the annual unofficial Bembridge and St Helens Fort Walk.

Each year the date of the Fort Walk changes depending on the tides. This year, according to the Isle of Wight Long Distance Walking Association, 7pm on Sunday evening (21st) is looking good.

At your own risk
Every year, the Fort Walk attracts thousands of people onto the beaches of St Helens and Bembridge, who – at their own risk and considering the weather conditions – take advantage of the low tide for the chance to walk out to, and around, the fort which is normally surrounded by the sea.

If you haven’t taken part before and are wondering what it’s like, read this account by David Champion. Written back in 2011, not much has changed since then, except the number of people taking part.

From high in the sky
Last year, Richard Manser of SafeSite IoW captured the first aerial footage we’ve seen of the Fort Walk.

With the rise (excuse the pun) in aerial drone video and photography, we expect this year will see more drones capturing the Fort Walk pilgrimage.

If you get any good footage or photos be sure to let us know, so we can share it with others.
