5 Films About Artists: Derek Barran

5 Films About Artists: Derek BarranComing up later this week, Thursday to be precise, Quay Arts will be screening local film-maker, David George’s five shorts about artists on the Isle of Wight.

We’re really looking forward to seeing all of the films, but in particular Derek Barran’s.

We’ve had the pleasure of spending time with Derek over the last couple of years and he’s a fascinating and engaging chap, so we imagine that the short film about his work will be just as interesting.

You might recognise Derek from the podcast we did with him when Totland Pier, which he owns went to auction last year.

During summer months, Derek opens his studio, at the end of Totland Pier, up to the public.

5 Films About Artists: Derek BarranIt’s a very special place and not surprising that he is able to create such eclectic works of art whilst inhabiting such a wonderful space.

Back in the 1970s Derek worked in the world of advertising, travelling the world which may be where he gained inspiration for his wide and varied art works.

In his studio you’ll find oil paintings, sculptures made from recycled materials, pencil drawings and mixed media.

The five short films will be showing on Thursday from 7.30 at Quay Arts. Free entrance.
