50 Island Businesses Sign Up to YMCA Children’s Bereavement Service

This is very positive news for the good work of the YMCA Children’s Bereavement Service. Kelly Matthews tells us more, in her own words. Ed

Jan Crayton and Kelly BurkeDuring mid November 2011, YMCA Children’s Bereavement Service (YCBS) launched a new community collection box scheme. Tremendously in the space of 10 weeks, 50 Island businesses have signed-up to the scheme.

With Big Lottery funding ceasing mid 2013, YCBS are busy establishing a network of fundraising opportunities to help sustain the service; this includes community fundraising.

“This year, we are increasing our efforts to raise the profile of the YMCA and it’s professional mental health service, ensuring our island community is well informed about the work we deliver for and with local children and young people. Islanders will want know where their donated money is going”, Says Kelly Burke, Targeted Services Manager.

Flanagan’s first to sign up
Flanagan’s bar and restaurant, Sandown, were very pleased to be the very first business to sign-up and they are already thinking about other ways they can further support the YMCA.

The collection box scheme invaluably enables local businesses and members of our community to support the YMCA and with the vibrant visual impact of the collection box design, you can’t miss them when on display!

Help a Kid, Give a Quid
The service’s community collection box scheme slogan ‘Help a Kid, Give a Quid’, may sound cheeky and cheesy, however if everyone on the Island was to donate just £1 every year (equivalent to 0.26p a day), it would fund YCBS delivery for one year.

With approximately 400 children and young people experiencing loss and grief every year on the Isle of Wight, there is a great need for this support.
