It’s official, Newport has been voted the 7th (in top 20 list) most up and coming culturally creative places in the UK with the Island fast becoming a beacon for fostering musical and artistic talent.
The results come from a new book, Creative World, commissioned by The Fish Can Sing agency, and compiled by, amongst others, the head of the Institute of Contemporary Arts, and the former editor of the Face magazine. The work is a projection of what life will be like in 2015 if the creative economy’s growth rate persists.
The top ten list reads as follows:
1 Peckham (home to Antony Gormley, artist)
2 City centre, Glasgow (Sharleen Spiteri, singer)
3 Totnes, Devon (Damon Albarn, singer)
4 City fringe, London (Tracey Emin, artist)
5 Hebden Bridge (Ted Hughes, poet)
6 Huddersfield (Simon Armitage, poet)
******7 Newport, Isle of Wight (Rob da Bank, disc jockey)******
8 Northern Quarter, Manchester (Steve Coogan, actor)
9 Brighton (Norman Cook, disc jockey)
10 Anstruther, Fife (KT Tunstall, musician)
This will not be surprising news to anyone who went along to Shopping Trolley last weekend, where the talent of island artists, was showcased and celebrated at this live arts club.
