Ryde Inshore Rescue was called at 1247hrs on Sunday afternoon to reports that a yacht had dis-masted to the East of Ryde Sands.
Ryde Rescue 1 to the 99th incident of the year within three minutes of receiving the call and quickly located the vessel off Nettlestone Point.
Collided with lateral post
It soon became apparent that the single handed sailor had misjudged the distance he passed a local red lateral post and had dis-masted after colliding with it.
In his attempts to remove his rigging from the post he was unaware of the incoming tide which was raising his vessel causing the ladder on the side of the post to impale itself through the vessel’s deck.
The crew of Ryde Rescue one were keen to free the vessel from the deck as soon as possible before the hull integrity was breached and between two crew members on board the casualty vessel and the helm of Ryde Rescue 1 manoeuvring the vessel they managed to get the yacht off without much more damage being sustained.
After checking the now, mast free vessel, Ryde Rescue 1 got the yacht’s sailing club to escort it back to his home port of the Hamble whilst the lifeboat returned to the post to remove the vessel’s mast, sails and rigging.
