Creative collaboration brings light and shadow art to Hunnyhill Primary School

Last updated:

This week, the Isle of Wight Cultural Education Partnership brought together Hunnyhill Primary School and Isle of Wight artist Kathy Williams for an inspiring art project.

The collaboration aimed to explore and embody the school’s values through creativity, while helping pupils understand that everyone can be an artist.

Art and expression through light and shadow
Kathy Williams worked closely with Year 3 and Year 6 pupils to produce unique artwork using paint on transparent materials. The process incorporated light and shadow, bringing the pupils’ creations to life in a dynamic and engaging way.

The project leaves a lasting legacy for the school. The artwork will remain in Hunnyhill’s outdoor classroom, where future pupils can interact with it using chalk, encouraging ongoing creativity.

Creativity beyond the classroom
Pupils were also excited to take a part of their artwork home.

This allowed them to continue experimenting with the interplay of light, shadow, reflections and colour in their own time, creating ever-changing compositions.

Artist’s Reflection on the Project
Kathy Williams expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to work with the school. She said,

“Working with different year groups was an amazing experience!

“The children were so enthusiastic and keen to explore what they could create with abstract painting, expressing themselves and their emotions. Adding the elements of shadow, colour, and moving shadows, there was an enormous sense of awe and wonder.”

She also thanked the staff and pupils at Hunnyhill, saying,

“The children truly have been excited, willing to give it a go, polite and just lovely.”
