A journey through six decades of albedo marz’s artistic journey at Ventnor Fringe 2023

Last updated:

art_house_life @ 35 Madeira Road opens this year on two floors with a (free) tour of recent paintings, collages, assemblages, drawings and 3d artworks by albedo marz exclusively for Ventnor Fringe 2023.

albedo marz is celebrating six decades as an artist this year, and in addition to a stunningly coherent display of artworks produced within the last two years on the ground floor, he will also be giving visitors a rare opportunity to access his upper floor studio.

Archive of artworks
People are always fascinated by an artist’s working environment, which is usually a space that is practical, reflective and archival. The upper floor studio of albedo marz is similarly arranged for his own requirements, and visitors will also find a monitor display of selected artworks back as far as the 1960s.

These archive artworks (drawings, paintings, collages, constructions and prints) have been selected to show the range and consistency of his themes and approaches over six decades, which relate to the recent artworks currently occupying the ground floor of the house.

An intimate and sensitive portrait of the artist at work
Also shown on monitor display is a photo essay by Sam French, third year photography student at Bath University, featuring albedo marz in production for this Ventnor Fringe 2023 show.

It is an intimate and sensitive portrait of the artist at work in his working environment, deep in exploratory contemplation of the materials he is using to realise the concepts that inform this show.

Large-scale immersive encounters
On the ground floor, large-scale immersive encounters from a broken world accommodate geography and psyche, history and science, myth and storytelling – bringing together that which does not yet exist with that which no longer exists.

A particularly unique encounter for visitors will be ‘Blast’ – a series of burned feasts, vanitas and cornucopias of objects, both natural and man made – arranged across a number of rooms. ‘Blast’ manifests itself most significantly in a ground floor room, where the installation clusters in the corner, reminding the nose as well as the eyes of its smouldering presence.

Use of plastics
Plastics are found in many of the new artworks – a reference to albedo marz’s “melting world” – visually throwing sections of his adjacent large-scale ‘Borderlands’ paintings into smaller 3D reliefs.

His displayed drawings are meltings and mergings of plastics, tracing paper and albedo’s characteristically masterful draughtsmanship in pen.

His collages delicately weave in between the other artworks across the ground floor, picking up and further articulating his sources and ideas.
