A Teenager’s View on Council Decisions

Continuing with the entries received after our invitation recently for writer’s to share their work with VB, next up is an opinion piece from 16 year old Kyle Newton. Ed

A Teenager's View on the CouncilIf you haven’t been living under a rock for the last two months or so, you’ll be aware of the massive up-roar concerning the abolition of the Student Riders concessionary scheme.

Last month, VB reported on the Southern Vectis decision to raise the half-fare limit to 18, which makes up for the loss of the beloved card that students once relied so much upon when wanting to travel around the Island.

Now beyond this, there’s still a problem that’s floating around on the Island, that being – “What’s happening to the Isle of Wight Council?”

Going down-hill?
It seems to me that they’re steadily going down-hill and although we can all blame the budget cuts, that doesn’t excuse the fact that someone is escorted out of the town hall by two policeman for stating his opinion on the whole situation (that being, the council IS going down-hill).

The council seem to be avoiding the obvious, and the budget cuts are the only thing they have to defend themselves with.

I’ve heard far too many excuses from them and although I’m fully aware this is, of course, a very opinionated statement – I believe that more than half of Islanders would agree, which makes up for this accusation.

The Island’s known as a small community and it’s about time someone stands up and creates something to show just this. We have to live here and it appears to me that the council are dismissing this blindingly obvious situation and just going ahead with plans with ‘the best intentions in mind’.

What are the best intentions?
I’m not entirely sure how ridding the Isle of Wight of all its speed cameras is for the best intentions, tell me otherwise.

It’d be great to hear from a higher power, in person, rather than having to rely on reporters only getting half the truth out.

What do you think? Do you agree?
