Solent Coastguard is coordinating the search for a stowaway who jumped from a refrigerated cargo vessel at 6.10 pm today. The man jumped from the vessel with another stowaway as the vessel was coming alongside the commercial port in Portsmouth.
The coastguard helicopter from Lee on Solent is currently searching for the missing man, along with Gosport Rescue Boat, Portsmouth Coastguard Rescue Team and the MOD Police launch. The Gosport Rescue Boat has deployed some canoes to search underneath the pontoons for the missing man.
Colin Griffiths, Solent Coastguard Watch Manager says:
“We are very concerned for the safety of the missing man. He has now been in the water for over an hour and as yet we have not been able to find any sign of him. The Marine Accident Investigation Branch has been informed.”
