THE ISLE of Wight’s newly elected High Sheriff and popular TV personality and author Alan Titchmarsh will be launching the Isle of Wight’s National Year of Reading at a book signing and short talk taking place at Lord Louis Library in Newport on Friday, April 25, from 3.30 to 4.30pm.
Mr Titchmarsh who is the author of best selling fiction and non-fiction works will be talking about his love of reading and signing copies of his books which will be on sale at the library courtesy of Waterstones.
Throughout the year, library staff are aiming to build a “reading Island” during the National Year of Reading.
The scheme is not just about people reading books but also about celebrating the enjoyment that reading can bring to peoples lives in all forms of media including the internet, magazines, newspapers or musical lyrics.
Each month at libraries across the Island, there will be themed activities for children and adults with everything from author visits to literary walks and competitions, quizzes and children’s activities.
25th April also sees the launch of a national library membership drive which aims to encourage 350,000 new members to join libraries nationwide.
Mr Titchmarsh said: “Reading is an extremely important element in my life and has been since I was a young boy.
“It is fun and accessible to everyone of all ages thanks to the network of public libraries where there is something to read that will suit everyone.
“I am delighted to support the National Year of Reading here on the Island and would encourage everyone to use their library service — you will be surprised at what you will find!”
