All welcome to grand opening of Parkside Pavilion

Thanks to Julia for this update from East Cowes. Ed

The much loved Pavilion Community Centre at Vectis Road, East Cowes will officially be re-opened as the ‘Parkside Pavilion’ at 12 noon on Saturday 19th March by Community Action Isle of Wight, in association with Community Spirited East Cowes.

The centre has been completely gutted and re-built in recent months, with new disabled friendly toilets, a transformed kitchen, a bright open community space and rooms available for hire for community events, parties and meetings.

Share your feedback and ideas
Jane Goddard from Community Spirited, who will be supporting the café and has been instrumental in re-opening the Parkside said,

“It is important that this will be user-led so we would love to receive feedback and ideas from people of all ages in the community as to what you would like, and how you would like the facilities to be used to bring the community together.”

Youth involvement
In addition a group of young people volunteering under the National Citizen Service with UKSA have been lined up to help raise funds for and decorate the outside of the centre in May.

The group are looking for volunteers for the Café and to support the development of further services, especially for young people after school.

Councillor Julia Baker-Smith, Ward Councillor for Whippingham and Osborne said,

“The Osborne ward of East Cowes is among the 20% of most deprived areas in the Country so it is absolutely crucial for the community to have a hub where people can come together and get signposted to other services such as housing advice.

“I was delighted to be able to assist the Parkside in raising the funding they needed to get up and running and would like to thank the organisations involved for their hard work and perseverance.”

Community café
A community café will run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for hot and cold drinks and light snacks such as jacket potatoes, soup and sandwiches.

A computer room with internet access will be available for users free of charge and a Youth group has opened in the Parkside from 4-8pm every Wednesday.

Well done – a good initiative and hope everything goes to plan. However, I wonder how long it will be before we see reports in the press that it has been burgled and vandalised. After all the incidents at the FJ Hospital, this would seem to be a new magnet for East Cowes vandals. Please be vigilant with plenty of security, etc. It would be very sad… Read more »

I did not know that anyone in East Cowes had been found guilty of vandalism.

Would Mr Jenkins kindly reconsider his statement.

History proves that many illegal acts have been performed in East Cowes by non-locals.

This building has been in place for many years and been used by many community groups. The neglect and disrespect of the Frank James owners for their own property is vandalism in itself and therefore encourages others to also disrespect the building, although the ‘Friends of East Cowes’ have been doing what they can to get it secured. The Parkside Pavilion will be cared for and a… Read more »

(And the ‘Friends of Frank James’ have been doing even more securing, including last weekend’s work, which was covered by OTW.)
