Randonee in West Wight:

Another successful year for the Randonnee

Our thanks to Tim Thorne for this report from last week’s Randonee. Ed

Over 2,000 people participated in the 30th Isle of Wight Randonnee. The weather was perfect for the event. As usual hundreds of locals were joined by many people from the mainland.

These types of events are becoming more popular on the mainland but the Island’s Randonnee is still considered to be one of the best as it attracts such a wide range of people of all abilities. Amongst this year’s riders were several cycle clubs, plenty of tandems and a young couple who did it on folding bikes!

Alternative route
This year’s ride was made more challenging to organise due to the temporary removal of the chain ferry at East Cowes. Members of the organising committee worked closely with the Council officials to amend the route. The diversion which went from Hillis Corner to Stag Lane and onto Fairlee Road worked well with some additional marshals helping participants navigate the unfamiliar route.

Randonee 2014 :

Andy Newman one of the organisers from the Wayfarers Cycle Club said,

“It turned out to be a fantastic day. It would be fair to say that the previous week was not the easiest we have had but it turned out well.”

Praise for organisers
Many of the riders, through the various social media sites, expressed their thanks to the Wayfarers for such a well organised event. The comments also showed that many people came to the Island for the long weekend with family members.

As usual the highlight for many along with the wonderful views were the feed stations at Bembridge and Yarmouth which raise funds for the local community.

Only another 51 weeks to the next one!
