As the next round of negotiations on the controversial Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) trade deal begins in Brussels, a delegation of 100 campaigners will take part in an anti-TTIP demonstration and meet up today with England’s three Green MEPs including Keith Taylor, Green MEP for South East England.
A cross European petition opposing TTIP now has over 1.3 million signatures.
Derek Hansford, chair of Hastings & District Trades Council who is part of the delegation said:
“TTIP is a trade deal that’s been negotiated behind closed doors between the EU and the USA. If it’s passed it would have enormous consequences on so many aspects of our lives, from the food we eat to our public health services. Ordinary people from across the UK are travelling to Brussels to make their voices heard. Democracy is about what’s best for everyone, not what’s best for the world’s richest and most powerful corporations. The TTIP deal is a hijack of democracy, and we need to stop it.”
Keith Taylor Green MEP for South East England said:
“Not only is the future of our NHS under threat but so our labour rights that protect us at work, environmental regulations that aim towards conserving our planet and food safety laws that safeguard our health. I’m very happy to be hosting 100 campaigners who also share my concerns and who are actively resisting this nightmare deal.”
