Appeal For Open Air Gym In East Cowes

Back in November last year, Frances Bourn from the ‘Friends of East Cowes’ made a presentation to the Town Council calling for their support in creating an Open Air Gym.

Appeal For Open Air Gym Support In East CowesThe presentation, made with support from Louise Gray, Physical Activity Lead for the Health Improvement Team for the Island Public Health, outlined the strong desire and need to create an Open Air Gym similar to those in other areas around the country and in Europe.

Appeal for financial support
Frances is now calling upon Margaret Webster, as chair of the Health & Community Wellbeing Scrutiny Committee and county councillor for the area, to support the request for the town council to cover the costs of Insurance and Maintenance costs for the outdoor Gym.

A site for the Open Air Gym has already been approved by the Police and as well as costs for set-up and maintenance being presented, figures demonstrating the prevalence of obesity in the East Cowes environs was revealed to the town council.

Frances explains in a letter to Cllr Webster that “It is proven that fitness can improve life expectancy, can help alleviate mental health problems, agility in the elderly, obesity in all age groups and can be tailored by personal choice to suit all ages and levels of fitness. An Open Air Gym in East Cowes will be a free friendly way to help all keep fit and healthy.”

Think i would rather have a library and toilet thanks all the same, because they would be used all year round and not require the attendance of the police every night

They would be if they were open more when needed! The toilets are in a disgusting state, do not meet minimum standards and suffer from vandalism. At least an open air gym would give young people a positive channel for their excessive energy. I suppose your comments would apply to the proposed approx. £100k+ play equipment for the seafront? I think the police could be busy down… Read more »

Sorry to be a wet blanket but it is my impression that schemes like these, installed with great enthusiasm quickly end up as ignored white elephants.
So I’m with Allen Marsh on this one

Actually, along the seafront in Minster on the Isle of Sheppey, they have this equipment. It’s extremely popular and it’s free to use.. It was graffited when it was first installed but after it was cleaned it’s never been vandalised again. I think the people who do the vandalising realised that they would lose out themselves if the equipment was removed. As well as keeping fit, it’s… Read more »

I also agree with Mr Marsh on this. Where I used to live in Upminster they installed one of these open air gyms. It became part of the childrens play area by day and turned into a teenagers congregation area by night. It was constantly vandalised and in need of repair.

Could I just ask why? I live in East Cowes and EVERYTHING gets vandalised. The playground by the lido on the seafront got trashed so often, they simply stopped repairing it. The toilets they built by Grange road primary school were so regularly damaged, they knocked them down. The playground in the same park is continually being set fire too, ripped up and used by thugs to… Read more »

I cannot understand why people are so resistant to change….even positive change?!

Why is it that things get vandalised on the Isle of Wight and not on the Isle of Sheppey? The situation there is very similar to here, apart from we have more millionaires living on our Island than they do and they have more immigrants. Other than those two differences there aren’t a lot of others.

Change – this is hardly change! It’s ludicrous. While across the whole of the Island, closures of vital services and buildings are yet to be decided, a group of ‘do-gooders’ propose an open air gym for a town that struggles to keep up with the maintenance of it’s already existing and regularly damaged amenities. It is a crass idea and very ill timed. Sorry kids, your local… Read more »

There’s one of these in Sandham Gardens at Sandown, and already half the equipment is no longer working.

This is not actually true…I’m down there every day and the only thing that has been vandalised/broken are the steps/handholds on the climbing wall…everything else works (as of this morning anyway)

Vectonion, That’s just not true. Yes, some equipment has failed, but it has soon be repaired. If you want a similiar scheme you need to get your Town Council to raise the money themselves, this is what happened in Sandown. The money was raised by applying for grants from several bodies. Sandown Community Partnership in conjunction with the TC managed the whole project and its ongoing maintenance.… Read more »

I think this is just what this group is trying to do. They say they can raise the funds to purchase the equipment from grants etc and asked the Town Council for support by taking on the insurance and management. As the council did not give a reply they are calling on IW Councillor Margaret Webster as Chair of Health and Community Wellbeing and who is also… Read more »

even if it were to get the populaces blessing i doubt anything would be done about it, our so- called councillors only seem to be able to accept an idea from our bosses at red funnel

It is my understanding that the town council are working extremely hard to preserve the library and the toilets as per the wishes of the town at the public meeting. This is something that would be paid for by grant funding from elsewhere, gifted to the town and the cost of upkeep to the town council would be minimal. Yes we are facing some very savage cuts,… Read more »

A fair point about Sandown, but I don’t think that there is the vandalism and thuggery there, that there is here in East Cowes. A play area for children in a park off the main road has been attacked and damged hundreds of times since it was built. Special rubber matting, parts of the equipment are damaged or broken beyond repair every few weeks. The seafront play… Read more »

East Cowes is a great place to live (been here 15 years now ) and i love it here ,can i ask who is going to supervise this as if you use a gym in the hights or madina you are not allowed onto the equiptment without an induction, so who would be liable if someone gets hurt

If vandalism is consistantly a problem in East Cowes, perhaps the best thing to do is to ask why? Clearly the vandalisers feel they have nothing better to do. While an outdoor gym won’t completely solve the issue it’s certainly a step in the right direction. Every time I’ve been to the Sandown gym it seems busy with people wanting to use it for the purpose for… Read more »

I lived in East Cowes for a year and hated it (Sorry!) The pool at the seafront was regularly full of broken glass and the kids’ play area on York Avenue was full of graffiti offering various sexual services from teenage girls with phone numbers. I have many friends who live in East Cowes who do like the place but I wouldn’t live there again. Saying that… Read more »

On a purely observational note Councillors Webster and Giles could both benefit from a outside gym .In different ways of course

Isla, take no notice of Tony, he exaggerates wildly. East Cowes is a great place to live, but if he thinks otherwise,as you ask, why does he stay? I and many others here are tired of this town being bad-mouthed by people who also deride “do-gooders” for trying to make a positive diference. I’d rather be a do-gooder than a do-nothing moaner.

Well said Isla and Margaret!! I have lived in East Cowes for 5 years and I have to say that for residents such as Tony to be bad mouthing it to such an extent it does beg the question of a. why they stay, b. why they don’t do something about the problems by suggesting solutions rather than winging and c. why they over exaggerate quite so… Read more »

Here’s an idea lets not do anything ever, and just moan all day long until we all end up miserable. So what if it gets vandalised or if we havent given enough money for elderly care, thats no reason to deny what is essentially a good idea for the health of our town and would give people in East Cowes a sense that they are cared about… Read more »
